COMPARING THE EUCHARIST

PASSOVER SEDER

  • Jewish ritual feast that marks the beginning of the Passover
  • Performed by a community or family retelling the freedom of the Isrealites
  • Customs include drinking cups of wine, eating matza,and partaking symbolic foods
  • eat lamb symbolic of the sacrifices of umblemished lambs
  • Retelling the exodus to children is the focus of Seder, strengthening their faith

SIMILARITIES TO EUCHARIST

  • Eating of unleavened bread an the drinking of wine
  • Meal shared with the community
  • Sacrificed lamb: Jesus is the sacrificed lamb
  • Eucharist brings us closer to God and strengthens our faith

DIFFERENCES

  • They don't believe Jesus is the Messiah,our salvation which the Eucharist fulfills
  • The unleavened bread and wine consumed is only bread and wine
  • The Eucharist is a sacrament not just a feast
  • In the Passover Seder there is no form or matter, just retelling exodus

THE AGHORI

  • Aghori, a Hindu sect, believed God exist in everything;everything is sacred
  • must have no fear or disgust for anything, nothing is unholy
  • Covered themselves with ashes of the dead, used skulls for bowls(Kapala)
  • Ate dead animal and human flesh , and drank human blood and urine
  • They embraced death and meditated on corpses

BELIEFS

  • They believed eating the dead was a direct pathway to god
  • Eating human flesh developed a transcendence of lower self and realization of the greater
  • Drank wine with their rituals
  • Intoxication helped them unconnected with the world and lead them to devotion
  • Believed eating human flesh had spiritual and physical benefits,such as preventing aging

SIMILARITIES TO EUCHARIST

  • our church teaches that we are truly eating the body and blood of Christ
  • The Eucharist is our salvation, human flesh was their direct path to God
  • Eating the Body and Blood of Christ has spiritual benefits,as they believe with flesh

DIFFERENCES

  • we do not eat the dead bodies of corpses
  • We celebrate as a community, the Aghori must break all ties with community except faith
  • The Body and Blood of Christ is divine not fully human flesh
  • The Eucharist absolves sin, Aghori believe no act is wrong or unholy
