  • Others fellows arrive later.

  • She whispers something to Nora and they both walk out.

  • Cynthia and Arminé walk in.
  • Arminé immediately begins to make coffee, but struggles with it.
  • The coffee hasn’t begun to brew and I already smell it.
  • The smell nauseates me. I don’t like the smell of coffee.
  • Shahé walks in and in a few seconds the coffee begins to brew.

  • Breakfast is ready.
  • The fellows continue to journal.

Writing Marathon

  • We debrief on the Writing Marathon.
  • Cynthia got sick during the marathon.
  • Charlene’s enthusiastic attitude is contagious.
  • She has lots of ideas and way to adopt strategy into the classroom.
  • David shares his experiences in Mississippi and with Freedom Writers.

Arminé’s presentation: Socratic Seminars

  • We take a 5-minute break before Arminé’s presentation.
  • Jacky introduces Arminé.
  • Arminé gives us background on the Socratic Seminar Method.
  • She then hands out the article Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior

  • We break into 2 groups of 4 and 1 group of 5.
  • Two groups take turns reading aloud and one group reads quietly.
  • Without discussing the reading we return to our seats.
  • We reflect on the reading using sentence frames to stimulate our thinking.

  • In pairs we decide who will be in the “fish bowl” and who will be the “shadow.”
  • “Fish bowl” members have to participate in the discussion.
  • “Shadows” evaluate their partners using an evaluation form.
  • We discuss the article in a safe and civil manner.

  • “This Chinese mother creates someone who mimics a creator, rather than create.” –Shahé
  • Members discuss ways to avoid this method from becoming a debate.
  • Bob talks about salary points.
  • He reminds us to be back by 1’o clock.
  • It's 12:10. We are dismissed for lunch.

Ethnography report

  • Lunch is over.
  • Charlene makes last comments on Socratic Seminars and "hot box".
  • Shahé gives his ethnography report.
  • He asked, “What’s the purpose of a writing marathon?”
  • 7 fellows share their thoughts.

We break into our writing groups.

  • "We are one family, sister and brother... related by love." -Rovy
  • "brokers do not see fortunes in my uterus." -Arminé
  • "I could blame the teacher, but that is not the type of person I am." -Char
  • "Like the beach and reef were part of the ocean, like the stars and the
  • moon were part of the night sky, so they were part of her." -Nora

The End

  • 3:00 as I walk out the classroom I observe that:
  • Charlene and Arminé are gathering their belongings
  • Rovy and Nora are putting the food away
  • Belen, Cynthia, and Lily discuss job interviews
