SET THE STAGE FOR FURTHER QUESTIONING
They foster the development of critical thinking skills and problem-solving.
Good essential questions are open-ended, non-judgmental, purposeful, and invite an exploration of ideas.
They, also, integrate technology to support the learning process.

RESIST AN OBVIOUS ANSWER
EQ are inquiry based.
They offer a creative choice that transforms the search for knowledge.
They provoke other good questions and encourage students to create their own questions as they attempt to clarify the main essential question.

EQ REINFORCE THINKING SKILLS.

CAUSE STUDENTS TO SEARCH FOR AN ANSWER.
They require students to draw upon content knowledge, personal experience and other information they have gathered to construct their own answers.

EQ SHOULD PROVOKE

AND SUSTAIN STUDENT INTEREST.
Good questions are likely to produce interesting student questions and take into consideration diverse interests and learning styles.

CREATE CLASSROOM CLIMATE

STUDENTS CAN ASK QUESTIONS CONFIDENTLY
Students will be uncomfortable asking questions if they feel they may be open to peer ridicule or sound as if they don't know the subject.
Students should be encouraged to ask questions of themselves also.
