In the article, “Top 10 Key Benefits of Communication” by Raksha Talathi, explains how communication can have a colossal impact on how people interact with each other. The article emphasizes that communication is a basis of good human relations, it is an aid to controlling, and that it facilitates delegation of authority. Unfortunately, a lack of communication can cause a team to completely stop in their tracks.

First, the article addresses that communication is a basis of good human relations. Communication is a transfer of messages which can be sent one way but misinterpreted another. In turn, a free flow of communication can help create a better understanding of what is trying to be said.

In “Misery” Paul would have to deeply express what he was trying to say to the crazed ex-registered nurse Annie, in order for her to not get offended and hurt him.

Second, the article discusses that communication is an aid to controlling. Humans control other humans because they want to see a certain action done in a certain way. When humans see something that does not fit their vision of how something is supposed to be done, their brain wants them to take control and fix it themselves.

Similarly, in “Misery” Annie controls Paul by how much medication she gives him, sometimes she will try to put him to sleep if she wants him to rest or if he does not want to do something for her, she takes his medication away until he does what she wants.

Third, communication facilitates delegation of authority. Authority can entirely be based off of good and bad communication. An example of someone who is in charge will discuss how they want a job done and specific instructions on how to do the job. Leaders can also give consequences to those that do a job wrong in order to show that they are in charge. Keeping an open line of communication will successfully get the idea across to both sides of the team.

In “Misery”, Annie showed many different ways of how she was in charge. One example is when she told Paul she wanted him to write a book based on her favorite character and since Paul did not want to write the book, Annie burned the one and only copy of his new unreleased book to show that she really wanted him to write a new book specifically for her. Another example was when Annie realized Paul had left his room while she was gone and as a punishment, went crazy with an axe and left him semi- disabled.

In conclusion, communication can be helpful and harmful for a team. Take Paul and Annie for example, had they expressed how they really wanted something to be done, the novel might have turned out a different way. If leaders and followers were to have a way to see from one another’s point of view, there would be no lack of communication at all which would help teams move further.
