THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR

  • Britain defeated France in the French and Indian wars
  • After the war, the colonists felt more secure
  • Britain was left with a large debt in fighting in the war

KING GEORGE III

  • He issued a royal proclamation to prevent Indian attacks
  • The king declared that the colonist can't settle west of the Appalachian Mountains
  • The king had to raise taxes so he could pay soldiers to bring colonist back

TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION

  • Wealthy colonial merchants used to acting in their colonial assemblies
  • Colonial leaders were also influenced by enlightment writers
  • Locke wrote that government was social contract and protected individual righs

PROCLAMATION OF 1763

  • The first disputes concerned the opening of the west
  • Following the victory in the French and Indian war, colonists wanted to move to the new land
  • A serious problem for the British, however, was maintaining peace with the Indians on these lands

SUGAR ACT

  • This act reduce the tax on imported sugar in half
  • It took steps to enforce it more strictly
  • A journalist and politician in Boston, organized protests against the sugar act

SAMUEL ADAM

  • Samuel Adam and colonist went to argue
  • He argued that the British government should not tax the colonist
  • He believed that "taxation without representation" was "tyranny"
