CANADIAN INUIT ESKIMOS

BY TESSA, AUDREE, AND TYLER

TRADITIONAL CULTURE

  • Traditional Eskimo life was adapted to cold weather
  • The major food sources are: caribou, seal, walrus, whales, and fish
  • They use harpoons to kill seals. Most hunt using kayaks
  • Dog sleds are their means of transportation
  • Eskimo clothing was fashioned of caribou furs

TRADITIONAL CULTURE CONTINUED

  • Some live in igloos in winter
  • Their religion is *animistic
  • Animistic is christianity

LIVING CONDITIONS

  • Today many Inuit live in single-story, wooden houses
  • The houses have a combined kitchen and living room
  • They also have up to two bedrooms

This is an example of a way of transportation the Inuit use to get to other places. They also use snowmobiles

EDUCATION

  • Most students either ski or ride snowmobiles to school
  • They learn basic skills like math, history, spelling, etc.
  • They also learn about their culture and traditions

LOCATION

  • The different groups of the Inuit are spread out all over the country
  • Many groups move to different locations depending on the seasons
  • They lived in northern part of thr Earth including Alaska and Siberia.
  • The temperature in winter is -29 to -50 degrees fahrenheit

WHO ARE THEY?

  • They are hunters and gatherers, and some move camp to camp seasonally
  • The food is not fresh because it has to be moved long distance
  • The growing season is only 40 days
  • The temperature can vary from -29 to -50 degrees Fahrenheit

SPORTS

  • The Inuit enjoy games that enable them to display their strength
  • These include weightlifting, wrestling, and jumping contests
  • They play a ball game that is similar in many ways to American football
  • Ice hockey is popular as well

GOVERNMENT

  • The inuits were governed by the Canadian system until 1939
  • Nunatsiavut has been self governed since 2006

CHALLENGES

  • Teaching, transportation, medicine, and broadcasting are challenges
  • They lack of sufficient housing
  • They lack healthcare, and poor living conditions
  • Suicide rate is very high for the youth

HOW TO MAKE BANNOCK

AN INUIT TRADITIONAL FOOD

Ingredients

4 cups flour, ½ teaspoon salt, 5 teaspoons baking powder, 1½ cups water.

Directions


Mix ingredients together to form a stiff dough.
Sprinkle flour on a clean work surface.
With very clean hands, knead the dough.
Dust hands and dough with flour if the dough is sticky.
Form in a round loaf about 1 inch high.
Bake on a greased baking sheet at 350° F for 30 minutes.

How to serve

Serve warm with butter and jam or honey.
