PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ESCAPE

BY ELYSSE WILLIAMS

OVERVIEW

  • Carolyn Jessie was born on January 1st,1968.
  • She lived in Hildale,Utah growing up.
  • Her 2nd mother was named Rosie.
  • She graduated high school at 17.
  • She planned to attend college to become a pedatrian.

OVERVIEW

  • When she turned 18, she was put into a arranged marriage with Merrill Jessop.
  • She was his 3rd wife.
  • She had 8 children with him.
  • He actually wanted to marry her 16 year old sister but mixed up their names.
  • She would have sex with him in exchange for better emotional treatment.

OVERVIEW

  • She left her husband when he went on a business trip on April 21st, 2003.
  • She suffered from PTSD and depression.
  • She eventually met another man and they got married.
  • Her eldest daughter Betty returned to the FLDS when she turned 18.
  • She was the 1st FLDS women to gain full custody of her children.

UNDERSTANDING THE RELIGON

  • The head prophet is Warren Jeffs.
  • 6,000-10,000 estimated members.
  • The color red is prohibited.
  • Women are not allowed to cut their hair, they are expected to wash their husbands feet with it in heaven.
  • They are taught that Warren Jeff's is the president and Neil Armstrong never landed on the moon.

UNDERSTANDING THE RELIGON.

  • If you have 3 or more wives you are guaranteed a spot in the highest level of heaven.
  • Their motto is "keep sweet" or fill yourself with the Holy Ghost.
  • The darker your skin the more sin you have inside of you.
  • You have to have sex with 15 chosen men if you want to become pregnant.
  • If the women are not in "sync" with their husbands they go to hell.

EXIGENCE

  • The way she was treated and the way that other women are treated in the FLDS community.
  • She grew up watching women be completely miserable and had to put up with families being destroyed.

AUDIENCE

  • Other people that left the FLDS
  • The whole world
  • Women
  • For her ex-husband

PURPOSE

  • To show FLDS that they can't push her down without a fight
  • To inform others about what really goes on in the FLDS community.
  • I think the author was extremely succesful.
  • I had a huge culture shock that people could live like that.

CLAIM

ORGINIZATION

  • The book starts off with her leaving the community and her almost getting caught.
  • The rest of the book was like a flashback until it reached present time.
  • I really like how it grabbed your attention and then just kept drawing you in.

APPEALS

  • Pathos and ethos was really effective but logos was not.
  • You could really see and feel Jessop's raw emotions.
  • When she was breaking down you just wanted to cry with her.
  • Logos was not really effective because there just wasn't a lot of facts just her view of things.

LaNGUAGE

  • The sentence structure was simple with a few complex sentences here and there.
  • It was also very informal.
  • "We had to fast and pray for three days. We want you to die so we can go back to father"
