Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois. He was taught by his father to hunt and fish and this greatly influenced his writing in his later years. When he was in high school he joined newspaper and primarily wrote about sports.

Hemingway served in World War I and was an ambulance driver for the Italian army. He received an Italian silver medal for bravery. A lot of what he wrote was actually based off of his time in the war.

When Hemingway was in his 20's he married Hadley Richardson and they moved to Paris together. There he met Gertrude Stein and many other famous authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald. Stein actually became like a mentor to Ernest and proof read a lot of his work.

He received a Nobel Prize at the age of 54 for his expertise in descriptive writing and shaping of contemporary style.

Hemingway took the twentieth century by storm with his writing because it was different from what came before him. he knew how to connect with the reader without embellishing. His writing was so powerful that he could make reader feel the despair or anger that the character was feeling. He made the switch from Victorian to contemporary. He knew how to write about love without "overdoing" it. Hemingway is considered the most influential writer of his time by many people.

The Old Man and the Sea is considered by many to be Ernest Hemingways best novel. It is about an aging man, Santiago, who has had nothing but misfortunes while fishing. Santiago has not caught one fish in over eighty days and is out at sea to break his bad luck. This book was greatly influenced from fishing with his father at a young age. Ernest was always very into masculinity.

He wrote seven novels, six short story's , and two non-fiction works. His works are considered classics of American literature.

In 1952 Hemingway went on a safari to Africa, he was almost killed in two plane crashes that left him in pain for much of his remaining life. Hemingway maintained permanent residences in Florida and Cuba. His house in cuba is still standing today and serves as a museum to the public.

in 1959, Hemingway bought a house in Ketchum, Idaho, and that is where he committed suicide in 1961. He shot himself due to paranoia and stress. He began to go crazy in his later years and he had hemochromatosis. He was unhappy with his life and drank a lot.
