Dominance within the Physical Performance

Bex: within this scene we can see the confliction between the female characters more so than the male.

this is shown by the way that erin in this scene takes over power from Tereasa by the way shes very calm and confident in what she is taking about.

even though Tereasa is standing, erin still shows more power/ dominance in this scene by the way erin has full eye contact and tereasa is blinking and looking away from erin which then builds up tension twards tereasa - this shows the spectater that tereasa is uncomfortable as she is looking for security / help arround the room.

In this scene the men are shown to be quite passive as they stay quiet while the women take control with the situation. This shows that erin is the most dominant in the scene because even though we expect the men to take control they take a step back.

the one prop that is being used in this sequence is the box of files. Tereasa uses this almost as a shield as she feels over powered by erin.

Class, Status and Clothing

Hazel:
We can see that in this scene the clothing that is used on the characters represents their class and status.

We can see from what Tereasa is wearing that it is a formal suit, we expect she is higher class and that she maintains authority in this sequence. we also see her personality as fairly masculin from her body language and costume. this suggests that she has higher power over the other characters.

Erin on the other hand is in bright colours, this also shows that with erin wearing attractive colours we automatically asume she is the main character in this scene.

She also hasnt styled her hair professionally as much as Tereasa has; we can see tereasa is sliked back whereas Erin is wild and untaimed which also reflects here personality. Another way in which her personalilty is reflected is by her low cleavage point. This also links to the male gaze in how erin is making the attention about her character.

Lighting and Setting

Bex:
In this scene lighitng is used to portray the characters iner-states.

one example of this is how erin is surrounded by white light which reflects on her character as the good guy. this links into the rest of the storyline thorughout the film as she is the one fighting for justice. Whereas tereasa is shown with darker shades of a background which reflects her lack of care towards the situation that is being fought for.

The three key lightings positions are being used; the key, fill and back lighting. We can see this as there is no shadows in any areas or on any characters. this shows that everyone is shown as nutural and in the same light.

The setting that is being used is a possible one as we can see that it is a office in a skyscraper with the big typical windows behind and the plain and dull room.

Composition

Hazel;
The Composition that is shown in this sequence is from then men in this scene, as we can tell form the camera shots that both men are sat at either ends of the table whilst both women are sat in the middle. This shows that the stereotypical view of the men having more power is not being used which breaks the codes and conventions. We also see that even though only one women is standing, as a spectator we see that both women still have equal power if not erin has more in the way that she is claiming the scene as her own.

Overall...

bex:
Mise en scene is represented in this sequence of 'Erin Brocovich' by how dominance is being played upon.

hazel:
we also see how all 5 of the elements of Mise-en-scene are important in creating a tense atmosphere within the female characters.
