October 27th, 1466 - July 12th 1536

Erasmus wanted to unite classical ideals of humanity and civic virtue with the Christian ideals of love and piety.

Erasmus edited the works of the Church Fathers and produced a Greek edition of the New Testament.

The church authorities remained unhappy with Erasmus's improvements on the Vulgate, Christendom's Bible for over a thousand years. They also felt threatened by his popular anticlerical satires.

Erasmus's far-reaching influence illustrates the impact of the printing press. His life and work made it clear that many loyal Catholics wanted major reforms in the church long before the Reformation made them a reality.
