PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WWHAT FACTORS CONTRIBUTE TO A PERSONS OBSESSION FOR LOVE?

LITERARY CONTEXT:

  • "Private Lives" by Noël Coward
  • Setting: France in the 1930's (during the Great Depression)
  • As economic and daily struggles increase, the more distractions one searches for
  • Ultimate distraction to depend on= love
In order to reveal what factors contribute to a persons obsession for love, one could look at it through a societal perspective within literature.

"Private Lives" is the story of a divorced couple that unexpectedly crosses paths during their honeymoons with their new spouses.

The divorced couple: Amanda and Elyot, cant hide their love for one another despite their separation. Why? The setting :

"Private Lives" takes place in France during the 1930's , during the Great Depression.

The Great Depression was characterized by times of struggle. What do people tend to do during times of struggle? They want to forget. They seek excitement, hence forbidden love.

PSYCHOLOGICAL CONTEXT:

  • Cognitive control: mental process by which knowledge is acquired. Perception, intuition, and reasoning.
  • An essential aspect to human nature: cognitive control
  • Psychological studies show: passionate love has negative effect on cognitive control
While the main focus of the scholarly journal was to highlight the negative effects which passionate love has on cognitive control, its main purpose in helping me answer the essential question was the fact that it focused on cognitive control as an essential aspect to human nature.

The idea of cognitive control seems to have no direct correlation to an individual's obsession for love, but the impairment of cognitive functioning does eventually lead to an individual's obsession and dependency for love.

This distinction is significant in answering my essential question because the authors concluded through studies that passionate love was responsible for impairing one's cognitive function and essentially, is responsible for a person’s obsession with love.

SCIENTIFIC CoNTEXT:

  • When involved in a romantic relationship, natural stimulant in the brain is triggered
  • Natural stimulant=dopamine
  • Dopamine is the same stimulant triggered when cocaine (highly addictive) is in use
  • Love is addicting
The scientific reasoning behind people's obsession for love is due to a natural stimulant in the brain being triggered. Aka: dopamine

Unsurprisingly, it is the same stimulant that is released to the brain when cocaine is in use.

Being that cocaine is a highly addictive drug, this piece of information is very significant in explaining why love becomes addicting.

Tucker explains that dopamine suppresses an essential neurotransmitter —serotonin — responsible for keeping obsessive and depressing thoughts from escalating to an unhealthy level.

ADDICTIVE LOVE HAPPENS BECAUSE:

  • Literary works such as "Private Lives" have proved that desperate times call for desperate actions. Such as having an affair with your ex-wife/husband
  • Psychological studies have shown that passionate love has a negative affect on our cognitive functions
  • Scientific research has revealed that love triggers a highly addictive stimulant that travels to the brain (dopamine)
