Just a quick run through of some important points for effective presentations

Planning

Planning is important so that you ensure that your presentation flows. It follows a logical sequence and makes sense.

An example would be to
1. Introduce your self
2. Say what you are presenting on and why you chose that particular topic
3. Outline your topic findings - what were the areas you investigated, what were your main findings,
4. what are your conclusions

Audience

You need to consider who your audience is before planning your presentation. Many of you will have chosen very specialist topics or areas that a general audience will not be familiar with. You need to bear this in mind when planning how you are going to deliver your presentation.

You need to plan for a non-specialist audience - not use technical jargon, or if you do you need to be able to explain what it is.

style

How do you want your presentation to come across - serious, humerous, business like.

Do you want to include practical demonstrations, have audience interaction, etc

Your topic choice may well determine the style of your presentation - it would be inappropriate to use lots of jokes if you were looking at issues to do with terminal illnesses but might work very well for other topics.

Visuals

Think about how you present your information - rather than using lots of words or numbers would you be better using images, or presenting information in charts and graphs.

Cartoons can often be a good way of presenting information and getting your point across.

A good relevant image or diagram is often better than using lots of words.

Animation - can be highly effective when used correctly but can easily be over used and detrimental to your overall message

Words

if you are going to use words on your slides you need to think about some things:

Readability - what font and font size are you using? Will all of the audience be able to read what you have put from where they are sitting.

36-44 font for headings with 24 point minimum for the rest.

Bullet points - no more than 6 per slide

colour - ensure good contrast between your words and your background.

Keep to a clear easy to read font - avoid very artistic font types as they can often be hard to read.

Thank everyone for listening and ask if anyone has any questions. A key part of the extended project presentations is to see how well you know your subject and can respond well to questions.

Time

How much time have you got to present on your topic. Practice your presentation so that you know you can fit everything in that you need to.

if it is taking too long look to see what you can take out.
