HABITAT DESTRUCTION

AN ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM

WHAT IS HABITAT DESTRUCTION?

  • Habitat destruction is when a habitat, such as a forest or lake, is destroyed or contaminated.
  • Some examples are deforestation and oil spills.
  • Some examples of animals that are most impacted by habitat destruction are:
  • Marine turtles, orangutans, Amur leopards, tigers, giant pandas, Asian elephants, and rhinos.

CAUSE OF HABITAT DESTRUCTION

  • Humans are the main cause of habitat destruction.
  • They chop down trees, leave plastic on beaches that goes into water, etc.
  • Most of this is because they use these things as resources, but other things
  • Are just damaging, like the picture in the back.

WHERE IS IT OCCURING?

  • Habitat destruction happens everywhere. It mostly
  • Happens in oceans and forests, with many types of
  • Pollutants and deforestation.

WHEN IS IT OCCURING?

  • Habitat destruction occurs when the conditions necessary for
  • plants or animals to live are significantly compromised or eliminated.
  • It happens all the time, all around us.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

  • A lot of habitat destruction happens because humans
  • Need resources, such as trees, we use for paper, firewood
  • And much more. But some of it is unintentional, such as
  • oil spills. Some of it is even unknown damage, like littering.
  • People don't thing the trash is going to be harmful, but it is.

HOW DOES THIS IMPACT ANIMALS?

  • Well, first of all, it takes away their homes, and it kills their family and sometimes them.
  • It poses the biggest threat on animal species. Many times, these animals are not found
  • Anywhere else in the world, which makes it way harder to recover.

HOW CAN WE HELP?

  • There are several organizations to end habitat destruction. Some of them are:
  • Nature Conservancy, Vital Ground, the Wildlands Project, and Y2Y.
  • You can help too, by planting trees, or joining one of these organizations,
  • Or even be careful on what you buy, for example if your buying wood,
  • Make sure they come from a supplier that doesn't harm forests.

ENDANGERED ANIMAL(MOUNTAIN GORILLA)

  • The mountain gorilla is an endangered animal, partly because of habitat destruction. There are only
  • about 700 left in the world. People have been making the gorilla's habitats national parks that are
  • protected against any habitat destruction or other things such as poaching. There are also many
  • organizations to help these gorillas, such as the International Gorilla Conservation Program and
  • the Gorilla Fund International.
