WHO IS PHILLIS WHEATLEY

  • A pioneering African-American poet, She was born in Senegal around 1753. At the age of 8, she was kidnapped and brought to Boston on a slave ship. Upon her arrival, John Wheatley purchased the young girl as a servant for his wife, Susanna.
Explain what the project/product/service actually is. What does it do? How does it work in very simple terms. This could be a short "elevator pitch" summary of your project so that people know exactly what project you're pitching.

  • She was with the Wheatlys and began writing poetry. She published her first poem at age 12, and her first volume of poetry, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, in 1773.
Explain why this product/service is needed and provide some context for your project. Why is the problem worth solving?

  • From the beginning, she was loved and John knew she meant more to him then the other servants did and she became family not a slave
  • Phillis had called her mom and dad master and mistress even though she was now part of there family she was just used to being a servent

It's important to explain how you'll raise awareness for this in a marketplace that is increasingly cluttered with all sorts of new apps/sites/products/services launching every day. FAMILY

  • She was the youngest in the Wheatley house hold she had two step sisters,Nathaniel and Mary they were twins
  • There family is Christian, and her mom(mistress) is described by historians as a dedicated and sober Christian woman
  • She got her name by the boat she was brought from in Africa
Make clear who this project/service/product is aimed at. Is it for a particular geographic audience, or a particular demographic group? Or is it for people with a particular interest (i.e. a psychographic?) Or maybe it's for people who have a particular problem or a certain need. Make clear who you are building this product/service/project for so that it's clear who will benefit from it.

FIRST TIMER

  • When she came to America she new a couple words in English but then She started to get home schooled by Mary(sister) and in 6 months Phillis was Abel to read most of the bible. In her free time after she mastered English she has learned Latin and Greek . Phillis also studied geography and astronomy. When she was fourteen years old, Wheatley began to write poetry, publishing “An Elegiac Poem, on the Death of the Celebrated Divine George Whitefield” in 1770, which brought her great notoriety.

  • In 1773, with financial support from the English Countess of Huntingdon, Wheatley published her first collection of poems. Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, she was the first book written by a black woman in America and the second one to be written by any woman. Wheatley’s poems reflected several influences on her life. Wheatley’s education in Latin influenced her to write in a short epic style. Some of her most popular poems were “To the King’s Most Excellent Majesty” and “To the University of Cambridge in New England”.

CAREER

  • During the peak of her writing career she wrote a well-received poem praising the appointment of Washington as the commander of the Continental Army. However, she felt that slavery was the issue that prevented the colonists from achieving true heroism. In 1778, Wheatley gained her freedom when her master died.

  • That same year she married John Peters, a free black man from Boston with whom she had several children. Wheatley passed away in December 1784, due to complications from childbirth.In addition to making an important contribution to American literature, Wheatley’s literary and artistic talents helped show that African Americans were equally capable, creative, intelligent human beings who benefited from an education. In part, this helped the cause of the abolition movement.

  • Phillis Wheatley was born in 1753 in West Africa.
  • When she was sold into slavery at the age of seven, Phillis Wheatley was transported from Africa to the United States. She arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on July 11, 1761.
  • The Wheatley's taught her to read and write and eventually she became the a poet and the first African-American to be published

  • Two of her best known poems are To the King's Most Excellent Majesty and Atheism
  • She died alone and impoverished on December 5, 1784
  • She was the first African American writer in America to be published and second African American writer in the world to be published
