Ethos:
Appealing to ethics.
When the author tries to develop credibility with their audience by citing facts, statistics, etc...

Ethos Examples:

  • The first paragraph of the Decloration
  • Phone commercials
  • Life insurance commercials

Pathos:
Making an emotional appeal
When the author tries to connect emotionally with the reader. Make you sympathize

PATHOS EXAMPLES

  • "He has..." this adds emphasis on the action
  • Substance abuse commericals
  • Clean water commericals

Logos:
Appealing to logic, making logical appeals.
When an author appeals to our logic to try to convince us that their argument is better than other arguments.

LOGOS EXAMPLES

  • The second paragraph of the Decloration
  • In 25 years of driving the same route, I haven’t seen a single deer.
