AND HIS LIFE WITH POETRY

Shel Silverstein was born in Chicago, IL, on September 25, 1930. He was an only child to Nathan and Helen Silverstein.

He never had any awful tragedies in his childhood, but he was expelled from the University of Illinois. After that, he attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.

While studying for art school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in Japan and Korea.

Silverstein was married once to Susan Taylor Hastings. They had a daughter named Shoshanna Jordan Hastings on June 30, 1970. Susan died on June 29, 1975. Shoshanna died on April 24, 1982 because of a cerebral aneurysm.

Shel also had a son named Matthew on November 10, 1984. The mother was named Sarah Spencer, and her and Silverstein were never married.

Silverstein had two main themes in his poetry, one was sillyness, and the other was deep thoughts.

AND HERE IS AN EXAMPLE

OF ONE WITH DEEP THOUGHTS

He usually uses external rhyming and lots of irony in his poems too.

AND HERE IS AN EXAMPLE

OF IRONY IN HIS POETRY

I think that Shel Silverstein has these themes in his poetry because he is a little crazy and silly on his own and because when he draws the cartoons for his poems, he thinks of more deep ones.

FUN FACT

  • Silverstein wrote a song
  • called "The Great Conch
  • Train Robbery" because
  • Matthew's mother Sarah
  • Drove a conch train in FL
