BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

  • The war dates back to August 1642 - September 3, 1651
  • It was located in the kingdom of England
  • The war was against the Parlimentarians, and the Royalists
  • The war resulted in the execution of King Charles I
  • Also established the republican common wealth under Oliver Cromwell

MILITARY LEADERS

  • For the Royalists, their leaders were King Charles I, and Prince Rupert of the Rhine
  • King Charles was born Nov. 19, 1600 and died Jan 30, 1649
  • He ruled over England and Ireland from March 27, 1625 to his death
  • His successor was Charles II
  • For the Parliememts, Robert Devereux, the 3rd Earl of Essex, was born Jan 11, 1591

MILITARY LEADERS CONT.

  • Earl of Essex died Sep 14, 1646
  • Oliver Cromwell was an english military and political leader
  • Later promoted to Lord Protector of the common wealth

BATTLE STRATEGY

  • Cromwell, was able to drive off opposing cavalry
  • Then turned upon the flank of the Royalists infantry
  • Both, the parlements and the Royalists used similar strategies
  • They lined up, had muskets, and in the middle they had an infantry
  • Both had similar weapons, horses and tactics
