The lion is a large felid of the genus Panthera native to Africa and India. It has a muscular, deep-chested body, short, rounded head, round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail. It is sexually dimorphic; adult male lions are larger than females and have a prominent mane.

The heaviest lion on record weighed an amazing 375 kg (826 lb). Lions can reach speeds of up to 81 kph (50 mph) but only in short bursts because of a lack of stamina. An adult male's roar can be heard up to 8 kilometers (5 miles) away. Male lions are easy to recognize thanks to their distinctive manes.
