Obtaining Energy

  • Solar energy is obtained using solar panels.
  • Oil and natural gas is obtained by drilling.
  • Natural gas can also be obtained by fracking.
  • Nuclear energy is obtained by splitting atoms.
  • Oil can also be drilled offshore.

Transforming Energy

  • Oil is refined in an oil refinery.
  • Coal is mined for fuel.
  • Natural gas must also be transformed before it can be turned into energy.

Distributing Energy

  • Oil is distributed by pipelines.
  • Oil can also be distributed by shipping it overseas..
  • Electricity is distributed by power line.
  • Electricity is converted in a power substation.

Non Renewable Energy

  • Oil is a fossil fuel, meaning it will take years for it to replenish.
  • Natural gas is also a fossil fuel.
  • Coal is also a fossil fuel.
  • Uranium is a fossil fuel as well.
  • All fossil fuels are non renewable.

Renewable Energy

  • Solar energy is renewable, meaning it will never run out..
  • Wind energy is also renewable.
  • Geothermal energy is renewable as well.
  • Hydro power is renewable.
  • And finally, Biomass is renewable.

Impacts

  • Bio fuels are renewable, but they cost more energy than they make.
  • Coal and oil can both cause air pollution when burned.
  • Solar, wind, and hydro power all are renewable, but each cause minor issues
  • Nuclear energy produces toxic waste.
  • Geothermal is good, but is very expensive to use.

Conservation

  • Don't run water while shaving/brushing teeth.
  • Only do full laundry loads.
  • Use microwave when possible.
  • Turn off lights when leaving rooms.
  • Set thermostats to 78° F in summer, 68° F in winter.
