PRESENTATION OUTLINE

FSH & LH

FSH

  • Produced in the anterior pituitary gland
  • Target organ for females: follicles in ovaries
  • Target organ for males: seminiferous tubules
  • Secretion regulated by hypothalamus since it controls the anterior pituitary gland

FSH

  • Function in females: stimulates follicles to produce mature eggs and secrete estradiol
  • Function in males: stimulates seminiferous tubules to produce spermatozoa

LH

  • Produced in anterior pituitary gland
  • Target in females: follicles in ovaries
  • Target in males: testes
  • Regulated by hypothalamus

LH

  • Function in males is to produce testosterone
  • Function in females is to stimulate a follicle each month to release a mature egg. It stimulates the secretion of estradiol and progesterone

HYPO-SECRETION OF FSH & LH

  • Diseases of hyposecretion are similar for both
  • Hyposecretion in females causes infertility, lack of ovulation, miscarriages, low levels of estradiol, lack of sexual development
  • Hyposecretion in males causes sterility and enlarged male breasts( gynecomastia) due to imbalances of testosterone production

HYPERSECRETION OF FSH & LH

  • Precocious puberty: premature ovulation and menstruation in women. Hyperproduction of sperm in males.

WHAT CAUSES DISEASES AND HOW TO FIX

  • Caused by adenoma in the anterior pituitary gland or malfunctioning in hypothalamus
  • Treated by removing adenoma in anterior pituitary gland
