Endangered species

  • American Bison
  • Big Horn Sheep
  • Gray Wolf
  • Amargosa Vole
  • Cougar

American Bison
The American bison is the biggest animal in North America, that makes them a target to many hunters. One of the reasons that American bison are endangered is because of hunters. Hunters managed to kill a big percentage of the American bison population by 1900's.

American Bison
Another reason why American bison are endangered is because of many diseases such as tuberculosis and anthrax. Tuberculosis is a very serious disease that affects your lungs. Anthrax is another serious infectious disease that is caused by gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria. This disease is usually only found in wild animals.

Big Horn Sheep
These large (mountain goats) may look cute and nice, but they are fierce animals and are always having headbutting matches with other male sheep. When they are not fighting they are jumping around on big rocks and mountains.

Big Horn Sheep
One of the main reasons that bighorn sheep are endangered is from illegal hunting. Poachers (Hunters that shoot animals illegally) shoot the sheep when they don't even have a license or a tag to shoot them. Authorities are cracking down on poaching endangered species and other animals that are not even endangered.

Gray Wolf
The gray wolf is the biggest of all canines but is still very small compared to many other animals. These animals are very dangerous in packs of up to 10. They can take down animals such as bison, deer and elk.

Gray Wolf
The reason why gray wolves are endangered is because of hunting and trapping by hunters. That is because it is thought of a nuisance of human encroachment to the wolves territories.

Amargosa Vole
Amargosa Voles are tiny little meadow mice that in the 1970 were thought to be extinct until they rediscovered one. They rediscover the little mouse in marsh near a river in Tecopa.

Amargosa Vole
The main reason why they are endangered is because of marsh burning. Another reason is that they are endangered is because of water drainage. Water drainage affects the mice because they prefer habitats with open water for them.

Cougar
These feline predators are just a bigger house cat, weighing in at up to 150 pounds. Cougars can kill prey up to 7 times their body weight and their diets contain large mammals such as deer and elk. Cougars are ambush predators and sneak up on their prey.

Cougar
One reason that cougars were endangered is because of human population growth causing habitat loss for these wild cats. Another reason is that many cougars get into vehicle collisions crossing the road. Thankfully these cougars are making a comeback and have grown by 30,000 in the US alone.
