• primary - source itself and anything produced by that source
• examples: people, creative works, laws

• secondary - any source that analyzes, comments, or studies a subject
• examples: peer-reviewed journals, textbooks, documentaries

source use

• summary (cited)
• paraphrase (cited)
• quotation (cited)

citations

• full citations (APA or MLA)
• appear only at the end of essay in references or works cited page

citations

• in-text citations (APA or MLA)
• appears in the text of essays with paraphrases and quotes
• one must have both types of citations when using a source

References/works cited page rules

• must start its own page
• must be arranged in alphabetical order by last name of authors
• must include hanging indents in citations

signal phrases

• introduction of outside source in the sentence it is used

signal phrases

• indirect signal phrase -source title or author is not identified
• "one author says..."
• "One article mentions..."

signal phrases

• direct signal phrase -source title or author is identified
• "john smith says..."
• "john smith, in a 2020 article in the journal science, mentions..."
