The Emperor

  • Emperor Hirohito was born in 1901
  • He reigned for 63 years, 1926-1989
  • Was not a agressive man
  • Considered to be descendant of Sun goddess

Pre-WW2

  • Signed agreement with US and GB to limit navy
  • Economy grew slowest in 1920s
  • Great Depression hit Japan really hard  in 1929

Earthquake

  • September 1, 1923
  • 8.3 on Richter Scale
  • 300 aftershocks
  • 140,000 deaths
  • 45% survivors lost jobs 

Manchurian Incident:
1931 - Japan blew up Japanese railroad and blamed China. In 'self-defense', Japan attacked Chinese troops.

Manchurian Incident 2:
League of Nations blamed Japan for attacking and Japan withdrew from the League.

Western Influence

  • Japan began to be influenced by Western
  • Teenagers began to reject family authority
  • Military condemned western influences
  • Western ideas undermined Japanese values
  • Japan valued obedience to authority vs. freedom

Military Takeover

  • Ultranationalists: rejected all Western ideas
  • UltNats assassinated many politicians 
  • 1937-Military forced government to accept domination
  • Military ended democratic freedoms
  • Military built cult around emperor, started Sun goddess  belief

  • Military revived ancient warrior values of bushido
