ROMAN EMPERORS

AUGUSTUS

  • First emperor(even though never claimed title for himself.)
  • Led Romes transformation from republic to empire.
  • His reign began the period known as the Pax Romana(Roman Peace)
  • This period of peace lasted for over 200 years
  • Took control in 27 B.C. And died in 14 A.D.

TIBERIUS

  • Came into power in A.D. 14
  • Political inability, poor judgement and jealousy led Rome into a dark age
  • He was not the preferred successor of Augustus
  • He was not the best Emperor

CALIGULA

  • Considered brutal and insane
  • He is thought to be Rome's most tyrannical emperor
  • He ruled from A.D. 37-41
  • He was assassinated

CLAUDIUS

  • Ruled 41-54 A.D.
  • He was an intelligent man and ruled the empire wisely
  • After Caligula was assassinated, a Praeatorian guard acclaimed Claudius as emperor
  • He lacked a military reputation,but he did undertake the conquest of Great Britain in A.D. 43
  • He had also added Mauretania(north Africa), Thrace(The Balkan) , and Lycia(part of modern day Turkey)

NERO

  • Ruled from 54-68 A.D.
  • He was the last Emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty.
  • Was accused of burning large area of land down for his own use.
  • Nero focused mostly on Diplomacy, trade and enhancing the cultural life.
  • He killed himself rather then face certain assassination
