By Jamie Barrett and Grace Myers

IMPORTANT INFO:
- their Latin name is Aptenodytes forsteri
- they all live in Antarctica
- they are the biggest of all living penguin species

Here are some fun facts...

Emperor Penguins are the tallest type of penguin. Their average height is about 4 ft tall. That’s about a 6 yr old’s height!

These penguins can dive 1,854 feet deep, and stay underwater for more than 20 minutes. They can swim as fast as 12 mph.

The average lifespan is 20 years of age, but some penguins can live to be 50!

The penguin’s plumage serves as camouflage when they are swimming. The black is hard to spot from above, and the white looks like the sun’s reflection from below.r

Emperor penguin’s diet mainly consists of krill, fish, squid, and crustaceans.

Sadly, the emperor penguin population is decreasing quickly, and the species is now considered near threatened. In fact, they may be extinct as soon as the year 2100!
