BIOGRAPHY

Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. Emily Dickinson left school as a teenager and lived a secluded life in her family homestead. She wrote hundreds of poems and letters that were later discovered after her death by her sister Lavinia. She is considered one of the most important figures in American literature today. Her family was deeply rooted in New England. Her grandfather was the founder of Amherst college and her father served as a state legislator. She had one older brother and one younger sister.

Emily Dickinson suffered from many psychological conditions as agoraphobia, depression, and anxiety. Scholars believe her fragile emotion state played a large role in her departure from school. Dickinson began writing as a teenager. Leonard Humphrey and Benjamin Franklin Newton were her two most famous influences. In the late 1850's to mid -60's is when Dickinson was most prolific as a poet. Lavinia and Emily never married and lived together at the Homestead until death. Dickinson died of kidney disease on May 15, 1886, at the age of 55. The Homestead, where Dickinson lived, is now a museum.

GREATEST WORK

One of Emily Dickinson's most famous poems is, "Hope is the Thing with Feathers”. It is known as one of the greatest poems in the English language. It metaphorically describes hope as a bird. That bird lives in our soul, and sings in all circumstances, even desperate ones.

SIGNIFICANCE

Emily Dickinson paved the way for many poets today. Dickinson was unlike any other poet in how she wrote. She focused on love, family, death, and nature. She found a way to reach readers and transform poetry and American Literature. She's also known for her unusual form of syntax which gives a strong voice to her literary work. Her works have been a model for perfection and originality for American poetry. Emily Dickinson's work and effort put forth towards the future of American Literature that will never be forgotten.

How does Emily Dickinson use syntax to enrich her poetry?

Dickinson's poems are lyrics and her interesting use of syntax creates a rhythm for her poetry. Syntax is the arrangement of words and phrases to created well-formed sentences. It helps create pause when needed to enrich her poetry skills and captivate the reader.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

In my opinion, I really enjoy reading Emily Dickinson's poetry. Whenever I read her poems, it seems to expand my knowledge. When I read her words, its seems as if they have a new meaning and each word is a story within its self.
