PRESENTATION OUTLINE

EMERALD CITY

BY ERIN WRIGHT AND GABBY WINFREY

The citizens of the Emerald City are formally known as Emeraldians, but are commonly referred to by their king and queen as “Gems”. The Emerald City was built on the idea of prestige and prosperity. Located in the heel of the boot of Italy at (40.3500 N, 18.1667 E) beautiful building towered over quaint houses, but it all seemed to tie together in perfect harmony. Having extremely warm summers, which varied from 93- 100 degrees and mild winters, which range from 50-70 degrees the Emerald City, had an extremely favorable climate. Marble of all colors decorated this city-state. The appearance of the city alone was able to allure someone into a dreamlike state of mind. People would rant and rave about how stunning the Emerald City was.

DEVELOPED CITIES

The size of the house depended on what social classes you were in. All were located on cobble stone streets with decorations of art like the Romans who lined their streets with statues to pay homage to their gods. The civilization's flag was Emerald green with a boot in the center. The marble was beautiful and everyone in the town adored it like how Nero rebuilt Rome with marble. The Gems lived happily and in harmony in their quaint civilization.

ORGANIZED GOVERNMENT

The Emerald City has a monarchy, just like the Chinese dynasty, who had emperors which are similar to kings. The citizens have to obey the king and queen’s orders. People are required to dress an act appropriately or else they are banished from the land. The decision of having a monarchy was decided by the citizens after having been under terrible oppression, which then lead to the overthrowing of their Emeraldian dictator. The king and queen are very kind and interact with the public as much as possible. They go out into public markets and help anyone in need, even if that includes allowing them to sleep in their castle, similar to Nebuchadnezzar II who helped by rebuilding broken cities.

FORMALIZED RELIGION

In the Emerald City Catholicism is the primary religion. God is very important to the people of the Emerald City that’s why priests are highly regarded just like King Tutankhamun was highly regarded in Egypt. They also spend a lot of time praying to the saints in their times of hardship like when the Sumerians went through a drought they prayed to their rain gods. God is the focal point of the Emerald City and because of the focus on Him, siestas are taken midday. The Gems go home with their family and dedicate that time to prayer. Beautiful Basilicas and churches were built with detailed paintings and sculptures. They were all modeled to look like famous bible stories and saints, like the Sistine chapel, which was painted by Michelangelo.

SPECIALIZED LABOR

The Emerald City is located on a peninsula, which makes it easier for the citizens to travel, like the Egyptians who used the Nile. The accessibility of being near the sea also cuts the time of trading to other countries in half. Having the sea surrounding them helps the Gems to find ways to purify the water, make salt, and hunt for fish which is essential to their existence. Most of the citizens work in water purification plants and the others work in the salt factories.

The fishermen and sometimes women have the most important job because they provide a lot of the food necessary to survival like the Egyptian laborers who made bread in order to keep the citizens alive. The tradesmen have the most dangerous job, which involves risking being captured and the possibility of getting lost at sea. Another plus of having the sea is being able to collect gorgeous shells and flotsam, which washes up on beaches and can be used for trade.

SOCIAL CLASSES

In the Emerald city the king and queen are at the top of the social classes. In Egypt that would be a pharaoh. Falling just under the kings and queens is the priest. In the Emerald city not a good portion of power was given to the priest, just like in Sumeria the priest had a say in government. Next are the trades men. After that come the fisherman, who are a key aspect to the emeraldians survival. Next are the salt workers and water purifiers. At the bottom are the artist. Your social class is based on your wealth, occupation, and influence.

RECORD KEEPING AND WRITING

The most commonly spoken language is Pig Latin. This language, which is also spoken by the king and queen, is similar to English. The words are English but the first letter of every word is put at the end and an “AY” is added to the end. For example hello in English would be “ellohay” in Pig Latin. This language was found written on cave walls and in ancient text, which was written on papyrus like the Egyptians who used the paper for their scrolls.

Records are kept on written documents, sand is ground up and mixed with other ingredients to create a sort of paint, then records are painted in Pig Latin on huge leaves and covered in a clear paste to preserve the document. These documents are then stored in the king and queen’s castle located in their records room. However, trade documents were different, translators from the Emerald City converted Pig Latin into hieroglyphs for the Egyptians to make trade between neighboring countries easier. This form of trade made the documents literally set in stone.

THE ARTS

The Emerald city was so rich in art that they were the best trading civilization in their time, just like the Sumerians who were also very experienced traders and artist. They had a statue for every saint lined on the street sides and extravagant portraits of the past and present kings and queens. The Gems strived to be the most skilled architects and painters of all of Italy. The citizens were always praising the art work and sometimes buying some for themselves. The Gems also Knew how to make glass, the Sumerians learned how to do this in 3500 BC. The best pieces of art were meant to reflect a civilizations power and bring its ruler prestige.
