Early Life

• Born on December 13th, 1903 in Norfolk Virginia
• Grew up in North Carolina

INspiration

• She was inspired by her grandmother who was once a slave...her owner arranged a marriage for her that she refused

• As she attended Shaw Uni. her grandmother's resilience stuck with her as she took action

• moved to NYC after graduating and joined several civil rights groups along with woman groups
• Joined Young Negroes Cooperative League

• Joined NAACP in 1940 as a field secrectary

• Became inspired by bus boycotts and began an organization called "In Friendship" which raised money to outlaw Jim Crow laws

• 1957 moved to Atlanta to help organized SCLC

• Left SCLC to organize school sit-ins after Greensbro began and SNCC began
