Early Life

  • Born on December 13th, 1903 in Norfolk Virginia

  • She was inspired by her grandmother who was once a slave...her owner arranged a marriage for her that she refused

  • As she attended Shaw Uni. her grandmother's resilience stuck with her as she took action

  • moved to NYC after graduating and joined several civil rights groups along with woman groups
  • Joined Young Negroes Cooperative League
