In this presentation, I will be highlighting how an effective ELL strategy can be used with an effective technology tool that can be found on the web. The teaching strategy that I will be highlighting is "Communication Games" and the website name is Kahoot! "Games are sometimes used in classrooms to develop and reinforce concepts, to add interest to the regular activities, and even to break the ice." (Herrell & Jordan, 2015, p. 151)

According to our text Herrell & Jordan (2015), "communication games are classroom activities that create opportunities and purposes for listening and verbal communication practice." (p. 151) These games can be structured in a variety of ways. For example, barrier games, where students sit without looking at each other and have to convey the information they have to their partner. Or another type of communication game that our text describes is where students have to share the information they have to solve a problem. These are just two examples but there are many ways for students to interact and communicate with each other in a fun way that can reinforce concepts being learned in class.

ELL Strategy: Communication Games

  • Identify a language need
  • Model the game
  • Organize the pairs/groups
  • Guide the practice
  • Reflect about the experience
  • Assess the students' abilities to communicate orally
  • (Herrell & Jordan, 2015, p. 151)
For this ELL strategy, a teacher will need to follow these steps to successfully implement this strategy into their classroom. First, a teacher will need to identify the skill that they want their students to practice. Second, demonstrate the game and review the rules for all students. Third, organize the class into pairs or groups. Fourth, provide additional support for students by moving around the classroom. Fifth, at the conclusion of the game, have students reflect about the experience. And finally, make sure you take the time to assess how the students are doing with the activity and provide additional support as needed.

"Games are the power strategy for culturally-grounded learning because they get the brain’s attention and require active processing. Attention is the first step in learning." (Hammond, 2015)

Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) as Hammond (2015) states, "leverages the brain’s memory systems and information processing structures." To make a CRT lesson, she suggest that teachers should either 1. Gamify it, 2. Storify it and/or 3. Make it Social. To combine the communication game teaching strategy with technology, teachers could use the game Kahoot! There are other games like Kahoot! on the wb but I have had a lot of success with Kahoot! in my classroom and highly recommend it.

Technology Connection: Kahoot

  • Create fun learning games for any classroom
  • Can be played in groups or pairs
  • Multiple choice answer format
  • Share with other students or world-wide
  • Use as a homework assignment to reinforce concepts
  • www.kahoot.com
Kahoot! is a free resource for teachers and can be used in a variety of ways. You can use this activity by creating a list of questions that you want to the class to answer. These questions can be centered around any topic, a skill that you want students to review or just as a get to know you activity for your class. Students will need access to either a chrome book or their phones to be able to join the game. Kahoot! works best when students are in pairs or in a group. You can also not only interact with your fellow classmates but with people from all over the world. A Kahoot! game can also be assigned as a homework assignment, however, I have never used it in this way.

In conclusion, Kahoot! can be used to support a communication game that has been outlined in our text. It is a free and fun resource that will get your students interacting with each other and the material being taught or reviewed in any class. When my students know that the day's lesson involves Kahoot!, the excitement level rises in my class. I hope you can find a way to implement this in your classroom soon. Good luck!
