BASIC INFORMATION
Elie was born on September 30,1928
He was born in Signet, Transylvania
He grew up with 3 sisters
pursued religious studies at a nearby yeshiva
He was influenced by the traditional beliefs of his grandfather

THE HOLOCAUST
Entire family was sent to Auschwitz (part of holocaust)
The holocaust took over 6 million lives of Jews
Was freed from Buchenwald in 1945
Out of all his relatives only his two sisters survived

AFTER THE HOLOCAUST
Lived in a French orphanage for a few years
Found out his little sister and mother died
Started to study literature,philosophy,& physiology
Started studies at Sorbonne in Paris

BEGINNING WRITING CAREER
Wrote for the French newspaper "L'arche"
Vowed to never write about his holocaust experiences
meeting with French novelist and Nobel laureate Francois Mauriac
In 1955 he decided to write
The book was originally written in Yiddish

AFTER BOOKS
In 1956 Eli Wiesel was hit by a taxi
Was confined to a wheelchair for almost a year
Applied for American citizenship after recovery
He wrote an additional 35 works in fench
