EARLY LIFE

  • Elie was born September 30, 1928.
  • He was born in Sight, Transylvania.
  • He and his family are Jewish.
  • He pursued Jewish religious studies.
  • When he was 15, he and his family were deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz.

TIME AT THE CONCENTRATION CAMPS

  • When he and his family got to Auschwitz, they were separated.
  • His mom and younger sister died on their first day at Auschwitz.
  • Him and his dad stuck together at Auschwitz.
  • Him and his dad worked at the labor camp Buna at Auschwitz.
  • His older sisters survived, but not much is known about their time there.

TIME AT CONCENTRATION CAMPS (2)

  • He and his father were transported to Buchenwald by train.
  • While on the train, his father died of starvation.
  • His father died close to the release of the Jews and the end of the war.
  • Elie survived the concentration camp.

WRITING CAREER

  • After leaving the concentration camp, he moved to Paris, France.
  • In Paris, he studied at Sorbonne. He studied literature, philosophy, and psychology.
  • He was a journalist in Paris, France.
  • He wrote the book La Nuit (Night) as a memoir of his time at the concentration camps and it was released in 30 languages.
  • He wrote more than 60 books and more than 30 books about the concentration camps.

  • Elie took an interest in the plight of persecuted Jews in the Soviet Union.

  • He and his wife Marion established the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity.

AWARDS AND HONORS

  • He was appointed by President Carter as the chairman of the President's Commission on the Holocaust.
  • He became the Founding Chairmen of the Holocaust Memorial Council.
  • He received the Noble Peace Prize.
  • Wiesel was awarded U.S Presidential Medal of Freedom and the French Legion of Honor's Grand Croix.
  • He became an unofficial spokesperson of survivors of the Holocaust.
