PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM

  • Covers a wide range of wavelength and photon energies.
  • Radio waves, microwaves, infared, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays
  • A range of all possible frequencies of electromagnetic radiation

FREQUENCY

  • The # of complete cycles per second in alternating current direction.
  • Measured in hertz
  • Related to wavelength

WAVELENGTH

  • Distance between a crest of a wave
  • The difference in wavelength is the way we tell differnt kinds of electromagnetic energy apart
  • Frequency times wavelength equalls the speed of light

ENERGY

  • The ability to do work
  • No measure of energy
  • Light waves with short wavlengths and high frequencies have more energy
  • Gamma rays. X-rays and ultraviolet have higher wavelengths

COLORS OF LIGHT

  • All make up the spectrum
  • The shorter the wavelength the closer the color is to violets/blue
  • The hotter a substance is the closer it is to violets/blue
  • Violet/blue/green/yellow/orange/red

The greater the energy, the larger the frequency and the shorter (smaller) the wavelength.
