PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MONITORING THE ELECTION

BY MARGARET REUTER

WEEK 1

  • Trump is considering attacking Hillary by "playing the Monica card", implying that Hillary condoned Bill's affair. This, however, would bring up the topic of Trumps three affairs. To which Trump replied "I have a good history" (Fox News 9/29)
  • One of Trump's employee claims that he wanted to fire women who weren't pretty enough. Trump's marital past and Clinton's history with Bill and Monica have been deciding factors for voters (LA Times 10/1)
  • Clinton is up by 7% (44%-37%). The economy is cited as a concern within almond Americans and 1/5 say that it is the top threat in our nation. Hillary wins the first debate and Trump is struggling to win votes. (IPSOS 10/2)

WEEK 2

  • The NY Times states that Pence was a "smoother debater" and Cain was referred to as "an evil crook out of the Batman movies" (10/5)
  • Swing states are beginning to support Trump but other states are pulling away. Issues concerning the senate and who would control it depending on the amount of seats held by each party have surfaced. (NY Times 10/7)

WEEK 3

  • The WA post states that a letter was written to Trump informing him that he could lose the election. The letter was from an elderly woman who supports Trump and is afraid that Clinton will take the lead. (10/11)
  • NY Times says that most people vote before November 8th so the election may be decided before that date. 40% vote early in swing states and only 16% of new Hispanic voters registered as republican (10/14)

WEEK 4

  • MSNBC says that Trump blames the media for "rigging" the election, providing false information, etc. in order to elect "crooked Hillary" (10/17)
  • Donald Trump claims the election is rigged. Hillary lead in three national polls. Trump calls SNL spoof a "hit job" (The WEEK 10/18)
  • NY Times informs us that Trump refuses to accept the fact of a potential loss. He does very little to address the issue of sexual harassment. (10/20)

WEEK 5

  • NBC news shows us that Clinton won the final debate by nine points. This means she won all three debates. Trump still continues to refuse to accept his loss. (10/21)
  • Trump and Clinton tease each other at the Al Smith charity dinner. The tenth woman accuses Trump of inappropriate behavior. (The Weeks 10/22)
  • Hillary may gain the 270 votes needed to win, but Trump can win the swing states and take the election. However, many people find it hard to believe that he can win. (Guardian 10/24)

QUESTIONS 1-3

  • In the past month, Trump and Clinton have had three debates, Trump has offended women and other minorities, and he has continues to claim that the debate is a scam and rigged. According to most news sources, Hillary is pulling ahead in the polls.
  • Over the last couple weeks, the media and society have focused on Trump's scandals and inappropriate behavior. The republicans have left Trump and are now with her or are undecided.
  • I found that the New York Times is reliable and helpful due to its massive amount of information. On the other hand, sources like BuzzFeed and NPR tend to be more biased

QUESTION 4-5

  • A) the author of the source is the New York Times
  • B) it is an online news article
  • C) The New York Times has a history of being democratic. They are pro-Clinton and leave out a pro-Trump/Republican point of view.
  • D) The overall message is the Hillary won all of the debates and has a good chance of winning the election
  • 5) I think, hope, and pray that Hillary Clinton will be the next president of the United States. Even though she has a questionable history and people don't like that, she is nothing compared to "The Donald". America has had bad presidents with questionable morals before and we are still standing tall. The American people will, looking back, be grateful that they chose the liar over the slimeball:)
