Eleanor was born in the year 1122 and died in 1204.

EARLY LIFE

  • Eleanor of Aquitaine was born to a wealthy family thus becoming one of the most powerful women in the Middle Ages.
  • At the age of 5 she became her father's heir, then inherited his fortune at the age of 15 after his death.
  • After her father's death she was placed under the guardianship of the King of France who betrothed her to his son, Louis.

Life In the Middle Ages

  • In general, women had few rights
  • Women were considered untrustworthy and more likely to be decieved by the devil
  • Aristocratic women had more rights, including their father's inheritance and land if no other male was born
  • These women were considered entrust worthy
  • They also had the opportunity to be educated

Eleanor of Aquitaine's Education

  • Eleanor was educated in subjects girls were not supposed to learn
  • She learned literature and horseback at a very young age
  • She was also educated in philosophy and languages like Latin

Eleanor of Aquitaine Accomplishments

  • Eleanor reigned as Queen for 65 years
  • She gave birth to 10 sons
  • She influenced the lives of women at the time by allowing them more rights
  • She encouraged the importance of education

Eleanor's Significance

  • She was an influencial woman in a time that women were frowned upon
  • She was well educated and proved it with the right decisions that she made
  • She reigned for 65 years, during this time the Church was on crusades that she was also involved in
  • Ahe lived a prosperous life in a difficult time and was able to make herself known as a leader

Fun Facts

  • She was the first woman to ask for a divorce
  • She was the leader of armies
  • Nursed and provided nurses for the soldiers of the Crusades
  • Worked to keep peace
  • Basically started chivalry, giving women respect and a new way of life
  • The background picture is the Abbey of Fortevraud where she lived her last years as a nun

This is the palace Eleanor lived in during her early years and towards her later years. It is also believed that Joan of Arc's "examination" was done in the great hall of this grand palace.
