HOW IT STARTED

  • The Egyptians had a problem with mice, rats and snakes getting into their crops
  • The cats kept them away and the Egyptians welcomed them into their homes

INFORMATION

  • All cats were called mau meaning he or she who mews
  • Young girls were often named miut meaning female cat

BREEDS

  • There were two main breeds- the jungle cat and African wild cat. They created a new breed they became more colorful and smaller and had higher tolerance for humans
  • They became domesticated around 2000 BC

  • From the new kingdom cats were often appearing on paintings
  • Most showing friendship and loyalty

  • Many gods were associated with cats.
  • A very famous one was bast. Neith often took form of a cat and was one of muts sacred symbols

IMPORTANCE

  • If you killed a cat it would result in treason
  • You would be put to death for killing a cat, accident or not.

  • They would mostly burry cats in bubatis and they would be wrapped in an oil and spices to preserve their bodies, along side buried with milk, mice and rats.
