EFFECTS OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

BACKGROUND

• Huge part of England's Production.
• Cheap and Efficient: 1/10 wage
• Children are small.
• 2/3 of Awkwright's workers were children

PROS

• Decreasing the wages of children increases the profit of the factory, increasing their ability to produce more
• This pumps more capital into the economy and allows for fast growth of other industries
• For example, businesses made machines, and the textile factories needed those machines.
• When the textile factories had to use less money for wages, they had more money left to buy these machines,
• having the same affect on the machine shops, which could then carry it on to other industries

CONS

• Child labor had negative affects on children's health
• Children were paid 1/10 of what adults were paid
• Children easily got sick in factories
• The children working in these factories were no older than 7
• Children would work varying from 18-21 hours per day
