Individuals with Disabilities Act, signed into law Oct. 30, 1990 by Pres. George H. W Bush
This act is for all children with disabilities the right to a free and public education that needs their needs that will help prepare them for their future.
Title IX Education Amendment of 1972 that protects from discrimination based on sex orientation. Meaning that if a school is wanting financial aid from the government they shall not excluded anyone from participating in or deny the benefit of any education activity or program. Not only does this act over public school it covers, colleges, for-profit agencies, libraries and museums as well.
This is important information for teachers to realize because times have changed and continued to change. Separation of gender doesn't follow the normal boy and girl gender anymore. Educators need to protect themselves in how they say things and do things in regards to gender.
This act was originally passed in 1988 as part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The Javits Act was the only federal program dedicated for gifted and talented students.
Purpose of this act is to coordinate programs to meet the needs of the gifted & talented students in school.
Holding schools accountable for improving academic achievement and improving & strengthening accountability, teaching and learning by assessment are also points within the act.
Districts and teachers need to be aware of the statement of purpose of the act as it provides financial monies to the district based on the achievement skills of the students.
School districts are to provide a "free appropriate public education" FAPE to each individual with a disability who is in the district regards of severity of disability or nature.
Section 504-a student needs to have or had meet a physical or mental impairment that limits one or more major life activities, be regarded to having such impairment.
1974 Supreme Court ruled it that the lack of secondary language instruction in public school for students with limited English proficiency violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
