Decomposer: Heterotrophic bacteria & fungi that break down dead/organic matter
-They release inorganic nutrients that are taken up by plants
-ex: mushrooms

Heterotroph: an organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances
-ex: humans, animals

Biosphere: the regions of the surface, atmosphere, & hydrosphere of the earth
-The biosphere has existed for 3.5 billion years
-It's divided into biomes that consist of species related to how they can exist in a certain climate

Carnivore: an animal that feeds on flesh.
-They generally eat herbivores
-ex: lions

Consumer: A person/thing that eats or uses something

Herbivore: An animal that feeds on plants only
-ex: rabbit, moose

Omnivore: An animal that feeds on both plants/animals
-ex: bear

Symbiosis: interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.
-Ex: birds riding on cows back

Niche: a position or role taken by a kind of organism within its community. Such a position may be occupied by different organisms in different localities
-e.g., antelopes in Africa and kangaroos in Australia.
