PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ECOLOGICAL SUCCESION

BY:DANIEL YOUNG, COLLYN JANAK, TANIA PEREZ, DESTINY RHODES

PRIMARY

  • Primary is "starting from scratch"
  • Starts at a place with very little top soil
  • Usually in barren or uninhabited places
  • Also lacking vegetation

Untitled Slide

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY

  • Hawaii, formed from lava hardening
  • It was once barren and had no vegetation
  • Then it grew vegetation
  • Slow weathering of rocks

SECONDARY SUCCESSION

  • Grows after disaster
  • Disasters that wouldn't kill plants
  • More common than primary
  • Natural regeneration after disaster
  • Studies are based on population

EXAMPLES

  • When fires, hurricanes, or other disaster hit
  • Warblers, vireos, thrushes,and woodpeckers
  • Renewal after forest fires
  • Renewal of crops after harvesting
  • Ground after flood happens

HOW IT COMES BACK (SECONDARY)

  • Grass
  • Shrub
  • Trees
  • Forest
  • This can continue longer after that

QUESTIONS

  • Does primary succession occur after a disaster?
  • Where does primary usually start?
  • Do plants grow in the same pattern after secondary succession?
  • Does it occur on preexisting soil or given new soil?
  • What are two examples of secondary succession?

CONTINUED

  • What is an example of primary succession?
  • How did Hawaii form?
  • Can primary succession happen after a volcanic eruption?
