EBOLA

PREVENTION

  • Avoid traveling to areas of known outbreaks.
  • Washing hands can greatly reduce risk of infection
  • Contact with an infected person will most likely cause infection
  • A dead body can still carry Ebola
  • Once infected, fatality ensues within 7-16 days in most cases

MICROBE STRUCTURE

  • Ebola is a filovirus and has a crystal structure
  • There are 5 different strands of ebola

MICROBE FUNCTION

  • The function of ebola is to infect a host cell
  • The host cell then gets tricked into making more viruses that will infect the whole organism

INFECTION PATHWAY

  • Ebola relies on endocytosis to "reproduce" and spread

VICTIMS

  • Humans
  • Monkeys
  • Gorillas
  • Chimpanzes

SYMPTOMS

  • Fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, sore throat,and weakness
  • followed by diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain.
  • A rash, red eyes, hiccups, and internal and external bleeding maybe seen in some patients

TREATMENTS

  • There is no known cure
  • Patients are sent into intensive hospital care
  • They are provided with essential fluids and blood that is lost
  • They are also treated for other resulting infections
