PRESENTATION OUTLINE

JUSTINIAN BECOMES EMPEROR

  • Crowned emperor in 527
  • Was called "The New Caeser"
  • Succeeded his uncle to the throne

THE HAGIA SOPHIA

  • Built in 537 by Emperor Justinian
  • The crowning glory of Justinian's rule
  • Was hailed as the most splendid church in the Christian World
  • Hagia Sophia means "Holy Wisdom"

THE PLAGUE OF JUSTINIAN

  • Began after Justinian's death in 565
  • Destroyed a huge percentage of the Byzantine Population
  • 542 was the worst year of the plague
  • About 10,000 people died everyday that year
  • The illness broke out repeatedly until around 700

RUSSIAN'S FIRST IMPORTANT CITY

  • Novgorod founded in 862
  • The Skavs invited Viking chief Rurik to be the king
  • Located north of Moscow

KIEV'S POWER

  • King Vladimir's son, Yarslov, takes the throne in 1019
  • Yarslov forged important trading alliances
  • Created a legal code for Kiev
  • Built the first library in Kiev
  • By the 12th century Kiev was home to some 400 churches

KIEV'S DECLINE

  • Decline starts after the death of Yarslov in 1054
  • Yarslov made the mistake of dividing the city between his sons
  • The sons tore the city apart by fighting over territory
  • Mogols invaded and demolished Kiev

THE CHURCH DIVIDES

  • The church splits around 1060
  • Divides into Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox
  • Church splits due to ecommunication by the pope and the patriarch

MOSCOW IS FOUNDED

  • Moscow was founded in the 1100's
  • Prince Ivan l was appionted tax collector in the late 1320's
  • Ivan convinced the patriarch of Kiev to move to Moscow
  • Gave Moscow's princes a powerful ally: the Church
  • They schemed to gain greater control of Moscow

CONSTANTINOPLE FALLS

  • City falls in 1453
  • The Ottoman Turks take Constantinople
  • One of the last cities in the Byzantine Empire to fall

RUSSIA BREAKS FREE

  • Russia breaks free from Mongol rule in 1480
  • Prince Ivan lll refused to pay further tribute to Mongol rulers
  • Russian and Mongol armies faced at the Ugra River
  • Both armies did not advance, making it a bloodless standoff
