EAST ASIA RELIGIONS

BUDDHISM

  • Based on teachings of Siddhartha Gautama
  • Theravada ("The School of the Elders") is a branch of Buddhism
  • Mahayana ("The Great Vehicle") is a branch of Buddhism
  • They believe in rebirth and that what you do in on life influences your next

CONFUCIANISM

  • Based on teachings of Confucius
  • Respecting your elders is a belief
  • Believe that everything is supposed to be peaceful
  • "Five classics" were books beloved to be the basic texts of Confucianism

SHINTOISM

  • There was no known founder
  • They believe that wrong deeds create impurity
  • They do purification ceremonies to purify them selves
  • They believe you go to yomi after you die

TAOISM

  • The founder was Lao-tzu
  • Living on harmony with the Tao or path
  • Believe in powers of yin and yang
  • Compaction, moderation, and humility are the three treasures

BUDDHISM AND SHINTOSISM

  • Similarities: Both are against wrong deeds
  • Both are main religions in japan
  • Differences: Buddhists believe in rebirth, and Shintoism believes in yomi
  • Shintoism believes that you need to have purification ceremonies
