EAST ASIA: JAPAN

RELIGIONS/ BELIEFS

  • The main religions are Shinto, Buddhism, and Christianity.
  • Shinto: believe in invisible spiritual beings and powers called kami.
  • Buddhism: believe in Buddha and meditation.
  • Christianity: believe in one God and that Jesus Christ is the messiah.

FASHION AND MUSIC

  • In Japan today, people wear western clothing that is popular in the US.
  • Traditional clothing includes the Kimono. It is worn during special events.
  • Pop Music is popular in Japan.

DIVERSITY

  • The main minority group is Korean.
  • Men and women are not really considered equal.
  • Men are given more opportunities than women.

EDUCATION

  • Children go to elementary school for 6 years.
  • Children then go to middle school for 3 years.
  • Children then go to high school for 3 years.
  • They then go to a University for 4 years.
  • Subjects include Japanese, math, science, social studies, music, art, physical education, and home economics
