The epicenter at a depth of 24 km, is 130 km east of the coastline of Sendai in Honshu Island

The earthquake triggered tsunamis that reached various parts of Japan.

By the time the tsunamis reached land, waves as high as 40 m swept everything in their path, causing death and immense devastation.

Seismologists estimate that the energy released by the earthquake is equivalent to 8000 Hiroshima atom bombs.

The huge amount of energy caused parts of the coastline to sink 1.2 m. The entire Japanese Archipelago shifted 2.4 m with one peninsula having moved 5 m to the east. Earth itself had shifted about 10 cm on its axis.
