  • WHEN I THINK OF EARTHQUAKES, THE WORD JAPAN COMES TO MY MIND
  • BECAUSE OF ALL THE EARTHQUAKES THEY HACE EXPERIENCED

WHAT IS AN EARTHQUAKE?

  • a series of vibrations induced in the earth's crust
  • by the abrupt rupture and rebound of rocks
  • in which elastic strain has been slowly accumulating.

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Nevada
  • Washington

HOW OFTEN DO EARTHQUAKES OCCUR?

  • Magnitude 2 and smaller occur several hundred times a day world wide
  • magnitude greater than 7, happen more than once per month
  • magnitude 8 and higher, occur about once a year

WHY DO EARTHQUAKES OCCUR?

  • Occurred on May 22,1960 in Valdivia, Chile

How do earthquakes affect the economy?

  • buildings being destroyed
  • The coast to fix the damage
  • people being hurt/killed

precautions taken to protect THE people

  • if you are indoors get under a desk or table.
  • Hold on to one of the legs and cover your eyes.
  • Wait in your safe place until the shaking stops
  • Stay away from things that could fall over on top of you
