  • Was looking for silver & gold for Spain
  • Discovered the mouth of the Mississippi

Marquette & Joliet

French Explorers

Marquette & Joliet

  • Father Jacques Marquette a french missionary
  • Louis Joliet a french fur trader
  • Goal was to convert Natives to Christianity
  • Establish fur trading routes
  • Made it to Missouri River where they turned around

Robert de la Salle

French Explorer

de la Salle

  • Traveled down the Mississippi River to Gulf of Mexico
  • Claimed land on both sides of river for France
  • Named after King Louis the XIV (14th)
  • Established a trade route for France

Etienne de Bourgmont

Etienne de Bourgmont

  • Established trade with Native Americans for France
  • Explored the Missouri River

Pierre Laclede & Auguste Chouteau

Laclede & Chouteau

  • Established relations with Native Americans
  • Began trading and establishing permanent route
