  • He made a diagram of orbiting planets
  • That the parallax couldn't be seen with the naked eye

ARISTARCHUS (310-230 BCE)

He was a Greek astronomer and mathematician

ARISTARCHUS CON..

  • He made a heliocentric model of the solar system
  • He tried to measure the distance to the sun from earth
  • He and his "inventions" are a major contribution to science

PTOLEMY (100-170 CE)

Astronomer, Mathematician and Geographer

  • His book "Almagest" is the few books from his time
  • It was based on observations of the planets
  • He invented something that told the planets motion in the future

COPERNICUS (1473-1543)

  • Data was observed with the naked eye in his time
  • He adopted Ptolemy's ideas
  • His observation fit observations better than the geocentric model of Ptolemy

KEPLER (1571-1630)

German mathematician and astronomer

  • He did an observation where nothing was a perfect circle
  • He tried again and found out that ellipses fit best
  • He formed 3 principles which are called "Kepler's laws"

GALILEO (1564-1642)

He approached questions with what we call now the scientific method

GALILEO CON..

  • He made improvements to the newly invented telescope
  • He viewed celestial objects with his improved telescope
  • He observed the moons; Io, Europa, Callisto and Ganymede which orbit Jupiter
  • Those moons are in a group called the Galilean satellites
