A long time ago in North America, acorns were an important staple food for the Luiseño.

AFTER THE LUISEÑOS

  • Gathered all of the acorns,
  • they stored them in granaries.

THE LUISEÑO USED A HAMMERSTONE

  • To take off the shell.The
  • winnowing tray is then used
  • to take off the skin.

A mortar and pestle were used to grind the acorns into a fine flour called meal.

THE LUISEÑOS USED

  • a process called leaching
  • to remove the tannic acid
  • from the acorn meal to
  • make it edible.

Finally, they cooked the meal in an olla and stirred it with a paddle.

IN CONCLUSION, ACORNS

  • were a very valuable food
  • for the luiseños. Believe it
  • or not, acorns can be
  • edible.
