CHILDHOOD

  • His Mom and Dad’s names were Daisy and James.
  • His sibling was Ruth Ellington.
  • As a kid he worked as a soda jerk.
  • His parents were pianist.

CHILDHOOD 2

  • He always dressed smart.
  • At age 15 he wrote his first song called the Soda Fountain Rag.
  • At age 7 he started playing piano.

MIDLIFE

  • At 18 he created his first musical group called the Dukes Serenaders.
  • In 1923 he moved to New York and created the Washingtons.
  • By 1927 they had secured an engagement at the Harlem Cotton Club.
  • He left the Cotten Club in 1933.

MID LIFE 2

  • He was known for playing the piano.
  • In 1933 Duke and his orchestra toured Europe for the first time.
  • The band was invited to the Newport Jazz Festival in 1956.
  • At 19 he married Edna Thompson and had there only child Mercer Ellington.

TOWARDS END OF LIFE

  • In 1965 he was shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize for Music.
  • For his 70 birthday he performed at the White House for Richard Nixon.

END OF LIFE

  • At his funeral more than 1200 people attended.
  • After his death he won 3 Grammy awards and a Pulitzer Prize.

DEATH

  • He died in Manhattan at age 75.
  • He was buried at Wild Rose Cemetery.
  • He died of lung cancer.
