NAMES

  • The pharmacological name is rohypnol.
  • Street names : Date Rape drug, La Roche, R2, Rib, Roach
  • Roofenol, Roofies, Rope, Rophies, Ruffies, the Forget Me Pill

How and who uses roofies?

  • Can be swallowed by pill, dissolved in a drink, or snorted
  • Can be used with alcohol and other drugs
  • Targets sex offenders to use on victims ('Date Rape drug')
  • Use in teens increasing today

EFFECTS

  • Short Term : sleepiness, relaxed feeling, drunk feeling, dizziness
  • Short Term cont. : disorientation, blackout, loss of memory, nausea
  • Long Term : anterograde amnesia, respiratory depression
  • Long Term cont. : physical and psychological dependence
  • Fatal when combined with alcohol, heroin, or cocaine

History

  • produced in 1970 – used in hospitals as a high sedative agent
  • 1975 - first released in European market,eventually sold in other nations in 1980
  • illegal in the U.S. since 1996
